Greetings to my distinguished professors and other colleagues, Happy New Year.  On behalf of the entire Exco of NASA, I congratulate you for the various efforts put in to sustain and advance the course of Sociology and Anthropology all through 2017.  I want to particularly thank those of us that found time to attend and present papers at the 2017 NASA Annual Conference.

As usual, the realities of our time necessarily challenge all of us to continually seek evidence – based and imaginative ways to understand, analyse and proffer plausible solutions. It is also my pleasure to use this medium to remind and encourage all of us, especially those of the professorial cadre, to endeavour to attend and fully participate at the 2018 NASA Annual Conference holding at University of Port-Harcourt, Rivers State, Nigeria.

Finally, I wish all of us productive and fruitful scholarship of Teaching, Research and Community Service in 2018 and beyond.

The 21st century has ushered humanity into a phase of development that was hitherto unknown and unimagined. With it came frightening challenges in numbers and magnitude that elicited the concern of governments and world bodies globally. There are issues of population growth, crises within and between nations, natural disasters, environmental problems, terrorism, insecurity and many others. However, one fundamental challenge of the 21st century is how to guarantee that the present generation optimises its opportunities without compromising the chances of future generations. This is against the backdrop of the fact that the earth’s resources are not infinite and should be used with utmost care and caution such that the prospects of the future generation are not jeopardized.

The FESTSCHRIFT in honour of Prof. Patrick A. Edewor is proposed to mark his 60th birthday. It will be recalled that Prof. Edewor has teaching and research experience in the field of Sociology with special interest in Population Studies for the better part of the last three decades. He has equally mentored younger academics and supervised at least a dozen Ph.Ds in addition to scores of Masters and undergraduate students. The proposed FESTSCHRIFT will serve as a befitting tribute and crowning glory to this pious and self-effacing academic. Prof. Edewor has a humble disposition and robust intellect with which he has touched many lives both within and outside the university system.
